Anwar Alaska

Anwar Alaska literally signifies the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This 19 million acre region is located in the northeastern portion of the state. You will find no roads that lead to this area, but there are various settlements located within. On the north part of the refuge lies the Inupiat Kaktovik village. In the south there is the Gwich'in village. Between these two villages is a historic wilderness passage which takes you through a varied ecosystem.

You need to travel by boat, plane or perhaps walk the Dalton Highway to jaunt the area. You will find regions of interior forest, boreal areas and of course the incredible coast of the Arctic Ocean. One of the biggest issues related to Anwar is the subject of oil drilling. While many believe the United States should tap into the oil resources on this refuge others do not. This is an ongoing controversy that is still under political consideration. It seems everyone has an opinion regarding whether or not the oil reserves of Anwar should be tapped.

Most of the vacationers visit Anwar Alaska every summer months and remain there for about ten days or less. Therefore they only see a small portion of the millions of acres that make up the refuge. You will probably want to sign up for a tour package which can make visiting this region safer and easier. There are trips designed for nature lovers, photographers, hikers, fisherman and others. These tours focus on a certain specialty and are designed for groups of travelers. You can find a comprehensive listing of companies offering tours that have been approved by the US Fish and Wildlife Service at their site.

Anwar Alaska is mostly about wilderness so it is inevitably not the ideal place for leisure. If you want to visit the cities and towns of Alaska in addition to the wilderness there are other locations that may be better for you. For example, the Denali National Park is only about 63 miles from Anchorage and is a beautiful haven for wildlife, plants and flowers. Other popular vacation destinations in this state include Juneau, Whittier and Fairbanks. More information about Alaska and its cities and towns can be found in books and online.
